MSI Showing Some Love With the Wind

According to a press release on their web site, MSI has now unveiled a special charity model – the “MSI Wind Netbook Love Edition”. Proceeds from sales of this model will be earmarked to support a range of notebook donation programs around the world to children in rural and remote areas learn computer skills and get online.

The Love edition will be a special white version with special trim of silver and heart patterns to convey a “gentle softness”.

MSI Wind: Czech Republic Version

Wow, we guess we weren’t kidding when we said “another week, another re-branding of the MSI Wind” in an earlier post. This week’s re-branded version, for the Czech market, is unique in that it will come standard with 2GB memory and a 120GB hard drive, more than the MSI Wind itself or any of its other variants. Users will also have a choice of Windows Vista Home Basic, XP Home, and Ubuntu Linux.

Techradar’s got a long comparison of the Asus Eee PC 901, Acer Aspire One, HP Mini-Note, and MSI Wind, evaluating each model on a scale of 1 to 10 in important things such as battery life, screen, and performance.

Final verdict? It ranks the four in this order:

MSI Wind: “combination of large hard drive and familiar OS makes for a well-rounded experience”
Acer Aspire One: “only Acer seems to be focusing correctly right now, and it manages this while producing a well rounded machine”
Asus Eee PC 901: “it just doesn’t capture the magic of the original, or do enough to warrant the high price tag. It works well though, and the expertise of the existing user base is reassuring”
HP Mini-Note: “The main problems we have with this machine are the relatively high price, and the choice of processor”

Another week, another branded version of the MSI Wind

This week, the country is Brazil- the Brazillian version of the Wind will be known as the Mirax Freedom, and will debut in August with the exact same specs and internals as the Wind itself. It will sell for 999 BRL, which roughly converts to USD $629 at today’s exchange rates.

Two Technical Articles On the Wind

Two detailed articles by Kevin O’Brien of NotebookReview.com on the MSI Wind, complete with benchmarks for those of you who like to look at the raw numbers.

The first article is a general review of the Wind, which he termed as “one of the best subnotebooks [he has] seen come out of the mini notebook storm that has hit us the past few months”, but dinged for poor battery life. The article includes benchmark numbers compared to other netbooks as well to a couple of mainline laptop models.

The second article is more interesting- he discusses how with a few tweaks, he not only got Windows Vista working on the Wind, but with better performance numbers than with Windows XP.

NewEgg Ships the MSI Wind

Okay, back from vacation.

As we enter into July, more and more retailers are starting to take orders for the MSI Wind. Aside from Fry’s, Amazon, MWave, and Buy.com, the latest online retailer is NewEgg, which has begun taking orders for $499 with an estimated ship date of 7/21.

Amazon still has not announced a shipment date, and somehow, despite not having taken orders in awhile, as of this writing the Wind is currently the #7 best seller in their Computers and PC Hardware section.

Mobile Computer Review MSI Wind

As reports of the Wind’s availability in the UK begin to trickle in, we now see the first review of length on the Wind, this one is by Mobile Computer Magazine.. Major points:

MSI has disabled the overclock feature: “MSI wasn’t confident that it wouldn’t affect the processor’s well-being and so sensibly removed it”.
The underclock feature remains. Underclock mode locks the CPU at 800 MHz and sets screen brightness to 20%.
On the previously-reported screen wobble issue: There is a little wobble when the laptop is jiggled, but not a huge issue unless you are very rough in typing technique.
