A crazy deal on the Acer Aspire One

…but unfortunately, most of us will just have to read it and say “darn”. Eureka Electronics, a store based in Kuwait, is, or at least was, offering the Aspire One basic model (Linux, 8GB SSD) for 59 Kuwaiti Dinars, which is a very affordable $221 in US dollars. Unfortunately, the sale was short-lived- according to commenters on the original article, the stores sold out and were down to display units within about two and a half hours.

Four-Way Ultimate Netbook Fighting Challenge!

Techradar’s got a long comparison of the Asus Eee PC 901, Acer Aspire One, HP Mini-Note, and MSI Wind, evaluating each model on a scale of 1 to 10 in important things such as battery life, screen, and performance.

Final verdict? It ranks the four in this order:

  1. MSI Wind: “combination of large hard drive and familiar OS makes for a well-rounded experience”
  2. Acer Aspire One: “only Acer seems to be focusing correctly right now, and it manages this while producing a well rounded machine”
  3. Asus Eee PC 901: “it just doesn’t capture the magic of the original, or do enough to warrant the high price tag. It works well though, and the expertise of the existing user base is reassuring”
  4. HP Mini-Note: “The main problems we have with this machine are the relatively high price, and the choice of processor”

Acer Aspire One Review

Laptop Magazine has posted its full review of the Acer Aspire One. Major points:

  • Keyboard: large enough, responsive, good tactile feedback.
  • It’s hard to add new applications unless you are well versed in Linux.
  • Tilting the screen back 45 degrees created a distracting glare. The speakers were loud but tinny.
  • During testing, the Aspire one got a bit hot on the underside of the unit on the left side (toward the exhaust), measuring about 107 degrees. Most other areas were warm but okay.
  • Good wi-fi performance.

Rating: 3.5 stars out of five.

Acer Aspire One on Amazon

For what it is worth, the Acer Aspire One is now available for “pre-order” on Amazon, with a “we’ll ship it when it’s available” status. Basic model in white is listed for $416.99, which seems high considering the $379 seen on other places such as Newegg or CDW. Of course, shipping is free and depending on the state you live in, you wouldn’t have to pay the sales tax on Amazon so thouse could be factors meriting consideration. There’s also an additional special offer of $10 off if you use Amazon’s Bill Me Later feature.

Ideally though, they should just correct the price as they did for the Wind. Then with all the stuff above, it’d be a pretty good deal.

As of this writing, it is ranked #44 in the Computers and PC hardware, #28 for Electronics > Notebooks.

PC World/IDG News Look at Aspire One

So, awhile ago, Dan Nysted of IDG News Service got a hands on with the MSI Wind, and in that article he promised more looks at different netbooks. True enough, he’s now got a brief review of the Aspire One, Linux version. Major points:

  • 12 seconds to boot up.
  • Hotmail doesn’t work with the built-in email program.
  • 95% size keyboard with a “Home” key that returns you instantly back to the Linpus Linux main menu.

Aspire One UK Pricing Update

According to a post on Windowswatch UK, Acer has confirmed their UK pricing for the Aspire One. The price for the base Linux SSD  model is no longer £199 with VAT, but now £219. One note of interest: instead of the previously widely reported 80GB hard drive, the article is claiming that hard drive versions of the Aspire one will now feature a 120GB HD.

Linux, 8GB SSD, 512MB RAM, £219.99
Linux, 120GB HDD, 512MB RAM, £229.99
Linux, 120GB HDD, 1GB RAM, £249.99
XP Home, 120GB HDD, 512MB RAM, £279.99
XP Home, 120GB HDD, 1GB RAM, £299.99

There is no update on which of the models, if any, will have the six-cell battery. A previous report on the French site blogeee.net had mentioned that the top Linux and XP models would have the six-cell battery.

PC Advisor Acer Aspire One Review

A quickie two-page review of the Acer Aspire One by PC Advisor, which gave it 4.5 stars out of five. Some insight on the trackpad:

Seems logical enough, but this layout – seen elsewhere in models such as HP’s Mini-Note – demands much finger twisting to get basic mousing and clicking done. Just as well, then, that the Acer Aspire One’s trackpad itself is less twitchy than some, allowing quite precise tracking. No attempt at multitouch here, but the right side of the pad is setup for vertical scrolling.

One additional interesting factoid: they were able to get a battery life of 3 hours, 21 minutes (no detail on test conditions).

Acer Aspire One Review, Pics

UK’s Mobile Computer reviewed the Acer Aspire One. They liked the touchpad more than the similarly laid out one on the HP Mini-Note: “the narrow buttons have a far more positive feel and the sensitivity is properly set to match the horizontal and vertical dimensions”. Lots of really nice pictures in the review, including a good one of the battery slot area.
