Netbook Manufacturers

A somewhat interesting article about which nameless company is the one actually manufacturing these netbooks. According to a Digitimes article:

Currently, Quanta Computer manufactures Acer’s Aspire one, Compal Electronics is doing Dell’s E series products, Inventec is making Hewlett-Packard’s (HP’s) Mini-Note PC, and Pegatron Technology makes Asustek’s Eee PCs.

The article also mentions that Wistron is the only major manufacturer not currently signed to make netbooks, although it claims it is actively involved in negotiations to do so.

NewEgg Ships the MSI Wind

Okay, back from vacation.

As we enter into July, more and more retailers are starting to take orders for the MSI Wind. Aside from Fry’s, Amazon, MWave, and Buy.com, the latest online retailer is NewEgg, which has begun taking orders for $499 with an estimated ship date of 7/21.

Amazon still has not announced a shipment date, and somehow, despite not having taken orders in awhile, as of this writing the Wind is currently the #7 best seller in their Computers and PC Hardware section.

Linux, 120GB HDD, 512MB RAM, £229.99
Linux, 120GB HDD, 1GB RAM, £249.99
XP Home, 120GB HDD, 512MB RAM, £279.99

There is no update on which of the models, if any, will have the six-cell battery. A previous report on the French site blogeee.net had mentioned that the top Linux and XP models would have the six-cell battery.
